TAMPA, FL -- It was cows not cars that took over the streets of downtown Tampa Saturday.

Dozens of cows from chocolate brown to spotted were herded from Old Water Street to Morgan Street to the Tampa Bay History Center.

The center is promoting it's exhibit "Florida Cattle Ranching: Five Centuries of Tradition." Officials said it chronicles the history and culture of one of Florida's oldest industries.

According to the Tampa Bay History Center Florida's ranching legacy began when Spanish explorers brought cattle and horses to Florida in the 16th century.

Tampa Bay History Center President and CEO, C.J. Roberts, said in a prepared statement.

"Staging a cattle drive at the History Center is a fun reminder that this aspect of Florida's heritage endures."

The Florida Cattlemen's Association and the Seminole Tribe of Florida participated in this event which mesmerized the dozens of children and adults who watched the cows take over downtown.

The exhibit runs until December 19, 2009.
