DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say a Dunedin man abused his dog and then threatened to kill a neighbor who saw him do it.

Pinellas County deputies arrested 20-year-old Cody Currie Sunday night. Currie's neighbor had told deputies that he saw Currie beating his dog -- a black pit bull mix -- with his open hand, throwing the animal against the window and yelling profanities at it. When the neighbor yelled at Currie to stop, Currie picked up a rifle and threatened to shoot him.

When deputies arrived at the home, they say Currie shot at the front door. No one was injured.

Currie was charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to animals and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was being held on $40,000 bail.

Two dogs at the home were turned over to Animal Control.
