TAMPA, FL -- Americans love celebrities. Whether you're talking about movie stars like Keanu Reeves, or those who are famous for no reason at all (we're looking at you, Paris), it seems we can't get enough of the glitz, glam and gossip.

But the sparkle celebs exude on the red carpet quickly disappears during the long nights of partying that have made Hollywood famous. The faces beneath the hair extensions and caked-on makeup can be almost unrecognizable. When those celebrities we think are invincible make mistakes, the photographic evidence can be shocking, and often hilarious.

One standout example is an amazing photo taken by the California Highway Patrol of Nick Nolte. Looking like a disheveled Einstein after a long night of drinking, Mr. Nolte is a far cry from the polished star we fell in love with.

While many mug shots are stark reminders that the use of drugs and alcohol can have dire consequences, not all show the excesses of life. Former best friends and jailbirds Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie look prepped for their complimentary glamour shots. Even Heather Locklear, who was fresh off her arrest for driving under the influence, looked made up and downright presentable.

No matter how awful some celebs looks in their mug shots, the photos can serve as a subtle reminder that there is no such thing as bad press.
