Bacteria closes Bay area beach

Last Update: 12/14/2009 4:11 am
CITRUS COUNTY, FL -- Fort Island Gulf Beach has been closed following the discovery of bacteria in the water.

Health officials fear contact with the water could pose an increased risk of infectious disease.

The Environmental Health Department said Friday that it's not uncommon for lakes, rivers and oceans to become contaminated with germs from sewage, animal waste and water runoff from rainfall.

The beach water will be tested again the week of November 23. Health officials will take the appropriate steps once those results are released.
