LAKELAND, FL -- The new year starts ugly for the Polk County Sheriff's Office as they investigate a murder in Lakeland on 7931 Indian Heights Drive.

Detectives were sent to the home after learning that 93-year-old Walter Farley was murdered in what appears to be a home invasion robbery sometime New Year's Eve or early Thursday morning.

Farley was found early Thursday by his son and daughter in law who lived with him at his home.  Farley was shot to death.

Sheriff Grady Judd spoke to the media saying this was "a heinous murder against a very fine 93-year-old gentleman occurred here, and we are personally outraged," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "Our homicide detectives will work around the clock to identify the suspect or suspects responsible for Mr. Farley's death, but we need the community's help. Please call us if you have any information about this case."
