TAMPA, FL -- Firefighters from Tampa Fire and Hillsborough County Rescue responded to The Falls Apartments on North Armenia Avenue just before 2:00 Sunday afternoon.

According to officials the fire came in as a 2-alarm fire, but was upgraded to a 3-alarm.

One firefighter was injured fighting the blaze. According to officials, Captain Jimmie Thomas was pulling a ceiling down to access the attic on the third floor when the ceiling collapsed, knocking him down.

He was able to get out of the building, but was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.

Because of the damage, the electricity was shut off to 24 apartments. Three of the units are vacant, so a total of 21 families have been displaced.  The Red Cross was called to help those who have been displaced.

More than two dozen firefighting units responded to the scene and about 100 firefighters were needed to put out the blaze.

Investigators estimate losses to be at least $250,000.

There's no word yet what may have sparked the fire.
