COBB COUNTY, GA -- Police have arrested a 12-year-old from Tampa saying he killed his 5-week-old cousin in Marietta, Geogia. The boy was left in a car while the infant's mother shopped at a Target store over the weekend.
Police say when the child's mother returned to the car she found the infant girl not breathing. Police from Cobb County began their investigation after medics took the baby to a local hospital.
The baby died at Egleston Hospital on Sunday evening after life support was removed.
The cause of death indicates blunt force trauma to the head. Police have not identified the 22-year-old mother or the infant.
The unidentified 12-year-old is being held in the Cobb County Juvenile Detention Center. He will not be tried as an adult. In Georgia, a child must be at least 13 to be charged, Cobb County's district attorney told the Marietta Daily Journal.
He could, however, be sentenced to time in a juvenille detention facility.
No charges are expected against the infant's mother.
Police have not said what led to the death.
