A woman faces charges after authorities said she tried to hand over meth to a 5-year-old child.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses saw Shayna Delaney driving erratically Monday evening.

“Just her actions, I could tell something wasn’t right,” Michael Varley said.

Michael Varley saw Delaney blocking lanes, stopping randomly, and he noticed her head swaying back and forth, going in and out of consciousness. He followed her to a parking lot.

“I go up to the window. She’s completely passed out,” he said.

Several people called authorities about Delaney’s driving. Another witness said Delaney was “talking to herself and acting very strange."

Authorities said when they arrived Delaney repeatedly told a 5-year-old child in the back seat to hold onto a prescription bottle, trying to hide it.

Varley has two children of his own and he said he just wanted to do the right thing, trying to stop Delaney from driving.

“If that was my kid, I would hope someone would do the same thing,” Varley said.

Delaney is charged with child neglect, possession of a controlled substance (meth), and possession of drug paraphernalia.
