The newest internet craze, the Harlem Shake, has Tampa Bay area all shook up

Harlem Shake finds its way to the Tampa Bay area

TAMPA - The newest internet craze is the Harlem Shake and we knew it was a matter of time before it would make its way to Tampa.

If you think you've heard of this "Harlem Shake" before, you could be right. The term originated as a dance move from the '80s in New York's Harlem. The body-quaking move was featured in music videos.

Then, in 2011, it was the title of an electronic song produced by Baauer, a music producer from Brooklyn, NY.

Now the song, "Harlem Shake" has become the track of many viral videos and dance move has evolved into something a little different. Now it's more of a video formula and less of a dance move.

If you look for the Harlem Shake on YouTube you will find many different versions made by people all over the world. The Tampa area has put its own spin on the meme.

The seemingly biggest contributor in our area is on the University of South Florida campus, dorm rooms and study halls.

Campus Lodge Apartments, housing for USF students, in Lutz made a Harlem Shake video that has it all. The meme starts off with residents and staff reading, playing games and just hanging out in a living area while a person in a moose-head mask dances on a table top. Then, right when the beat drops, chaos ensues. There is a hula dancer, Spiderman, a banjo player in a canoe and a dancer punching a palm tree with a sign reminding students that rent is due. Most importantly, everybody is dancing.

The Robinson High School Lacrosse Team, a Tampa swim team, area businesses and offices have all joined in by making their own video. You can find shakers on Central Florida lakeside docks and in Ybor dance clubs. There is even a family Harlem Shake where a dad is wearing a lightning sweatshirt. Tampa is represented well in the YouTube sensation
