COLUMBUS, Ga. - A man who escaped a Georgia house fire along with seven other people went back inside the burning home to save something he admits is pretty important to him: beer.

Six adults and two kids were inside their home in Columbus, Ga. when the room began to fill with smoke, MS News Now reports. ( http://wfts.tv/1arx9u0 )

The children and the adults made it out safely, but Walter Serpit, who uses a cane, went back inside.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," he told the news station.

He was able to grab several cans of beer and escape the home again without getting burned.

Firefighters put out the fire and Red Cross is helping the family.

Officials haven't determined the cause of the fire, but local residents speculate a newly installed water heater is to blame.
