Inmates to get access to MP3 players to enjoy music, battle boredom

Hundreds of thousands of federally imprisoned criminals will be given permission to rock out to music on MP3 players to help them battle idleness and boredom, according to a USA Today article.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons is providing 200,000 inmates with access MP3 players that will be sold in prison commissaries. The devices can connect with about one million song titles inmates can enjoy to pass the time.

But this list excludes any music that is explicit, obscene as well as songs the bureau feels may cause disorder prison systems.

The American Civil Liberties Union supports the program and believes it's a positive step for connected inmates to the outside world. Others aren't so welcoming to the idea.

Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley said the MP3s can be used as bargaining tools or other malicious devices.
