Last week, Grouponers in Indianapolis were thrown for a loop when they received a pitch for $10 worth of human breast milk . But the milk wasn't for drinking, it was for donation.
According to a report from TIME's Healthland blog , each consumer's purchase would go toward funding for the Indiana Mothers' Milk Bank (IMMB) to help provide sick or premature babies in need with pasteurized breast milk.
The $10 Groupon deal could be considered a small investment for a better future. According to information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services , recent studies suggest that if 90 percent of all American families chose to breastfeed for the first six months of their child's life, 1,000 infant deaths could be prevented each year. Additionally, breast feeding could save Americans about $13 billion annually as medical care costs are lower for fully-breastfed infants than never-breastfed infants.
The breast milk deal was a venture of Groupon's newly-launched G-Team . The team uses Groupon's reach to connect people within communities to accomplish something that likely couldn't be done with just individual efforts.
The G-Team website lists several categories of campaigns: philanthropic, civic engagements and social events. Though the breast milk deal definitely falls under the philanthropic missions, other G-Team deals could include anything from a neighborhood clean-up project to a flash mob.
