Tampa police locate suspect vehicle sought in connection wth deadly hit and run

UPDATE |  A suspect vehicle has been located in connection with the fatal hit-and-run traffic accident involving a bicyclist on West Hillsborough Avenue at North Himes Avenue early Sunday morning, Tampa police officials said.

ORIGINAL STORY | Tampa police are investigating a fatal early morning hit and run traffic accident at the intersection of West Hillsborough and North Himes avenues.

Police are searchinf for a red Dodge Ram pickup or a SUV with a missing side mirror and extensive front-end damage. 

The vehicle struck and killed a bicyclist in the crosswalk on Hillsborough Avenue about 3:22 a.m. Sunday, the Tampa Police Department said.

The car sped away westbound on Hillsborough.

Emergency personnel from Tampa Fire Rescue pronounced the bicyclist dead on the scene. The name of the victim was not released.

Traffic is shut down in both directions on Hillsborough from Himes to North Dale Mabry Highway. The stretch of West Hillsborough Avenue is expected to remain closed for three to four hours, so officers can gather evidence and conduct an investigation.

Tampa police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash or have information about it should call the Tampa Police Department at (813) 231-6130.

Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
