Two people received minor injuries when their vehicle collided with another one traveling the wrong way on Interstate 275 near Pinellas Point Drive in south St. Petersburg early Sunday, officials said.

Just before 4:00 a.m. Sunday, the Tampa Bay Regional Communications Center received a report of a suspected wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-275 just north of the Dick Misner Bridge, the highway report said. Minutes later the Florida Highway Patrol received a report of a crash in the same area.

The driver of a Toyota Camry, identified as 21-year-old Jeffrey Vendre of St. Petersburg, was headed northbound in the southbound lanes of the interstate when the Camry collided with a Nissan Xterra SUV.

Paramedics took 18-year-old Ruby Trevino, the driver of the NIssan, and her passenger, 18-year-old Mayte Zapata-Beaz, to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment of minor injuries.

Vendredi did not suffer any injuries in the crash. Troopers charged him with DUI involving property damage. He was released from the Pinellas County Jail on Sunday after posting $500 bail.
