New moms and dads are often exhausted, trying to do the best they can to nurture their baby.

So it's important they take the extra step to protect their little ones.

New parents should not sleep with their newborns, said an educator at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville.

Janel Harding of Oak Hill Hospital said new parents should resist the temptation to allow a baby to sleep with them for the sake of child's safety. She recommends waiting at least a year.

The aim is to avoid unintended incidents such as rollovers or suffocations, Harding said.

Babies should also sleep on their backs on a firm mattress ideally in the same room as their parents.

ABC Action News Anchor Lindsay Logue sat down with Harding for an interview in Studio A Sunday. They talked classes Harding teaches at Oak Hill Hospital about safe sleeping habits for new parents.
