The kennel at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center has been near capacity since Hurricane Irma snaked through Florida in September.
On Saturday the center at 440 N. Falkenburg Road in Tampa opened its doors to people interested in giving some of the strays news homes.
Christine O'Dell, volunteer manager at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center, said the agency took in about 80 dogs and cats after Irma.
None of them were part of a large pet adoption event in Jacksonville this weekend.
About 100 dogs from Hillsborough's Pet Resource Center traveled to Jacksonville Thursday to participate in the adoption fair. It marked the first time the Pet Resource Center has participated in the Mega Pet Adoption event, which is expected to help find permanent, loving homes for virtually every dog that makes the trip.
The Pet Resource Center has been at or near capacity in recent weeks, and the adoption event is expected to open up significant kennel space that will be available for additional dogs.
The center is the only open admission shelter in Hillsborough County, meaning it accepts all dogs and cats regardless of size, age, breed, or medical condition.
