A 56-year-old man was critically injured when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Cleveland Street and Missouri Avenue Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Donna Timmons, the driver of a 2011 Kia, was driving southbound on Missouri Avenue south of Cleveland when the pedestrian stepped in front of the Kia, the Clearwater Police Department said. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk at the time.

The injured man, who lives in Clearwater, was treated on scene by Clearwater Fire and Rescue medics then taken by ambulance to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment. He was last listed in critical condition. His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Clearwater police traffic homicide investigators were called to the scene to gather evidence, which is standard procedure for a traffic accident involving potential life-threatening injuries.

Portions of the Missouri Ave./Cleveland St. intersection were closed for 2 1/2 hours.
