Musical RENT raises profile of Marfan syndrome in Tampa Bay area

With the road tour of RENT at the Straz Center, two Tampa families took advantage of the chance to bring awareness to Marfan syndrome, a potentially fatal condition.

Marfan syndrome is believed to have caused the death of Tony Award winning RENT playwright Jonathan Larson.

Hillsborough High School teacher Liz Funk loss of her husband to complications from Marfan syndrome. Greg Tenant, whose wife Colleen is coordinating the event alongside Funk, was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome in 2010 after suffering an aortic dissection.

Funk and Colleen Tennant working in partnership with the cast of RENT and the Straz Center are raising money for The Marfan Foundation. Hillsborough High students has been staffing a booth during all eight performances of RENT at the Straz this week to collect funds for the foundation.

Funk and Greg Tennant dropped by the ABC Action News studios to talk about the project.
