TAMPA - Heading up a non-profit medical institution in the Tampa Bay area appears to be a good way to make some serious coin.
The ABC Action News I-Team has looked at executive compensation at the 30 local charities that bring in the most money, including donations from the public. Three of those that pay their top executives seven-figure salaries are major Bay area health care facilities.
At Florida Health Sciences Center Inc., the entity that Hillsborough County officials created to take Tampa General Hospital private, President and Chief Executive Officer Ronald A. Hytoff received $2.3 million in total compensation for the year that ended Sept. 30, 2010. That is the most recent pay figure available from the hospital's tax return filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
Stephen K. Klasko, dean of the University of South Florida's medical school, was next on the list. A director of the tax-exempt University Medical Service Association Inc., Klasko made $1.2 million for the year that wrapped up June 30, 2010. The association is a support organization for the medical school.
Rounding out the trio, William S. Dalton, president and CEO of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Inc., earned slightly more than $1 million for the same time period as Klasko's compensation.
All three men have extensive education and experience.
For instance, Klasko is an obstetrician-gynecologist with a master's degree in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania's prestigious Wharton business school. But Klasko wasn't even the highest-paid director of the University Medical Service Association in 2010. That distinction went to Neil A. Fenske, a dermatologist and chairman of the USF medical school's Department of Dermatology & Cutaneous Surgery. He got $1.5 million in 2010.
Other high-earners in the region's non-profit sector included University of South Florida Foundation CEO Joel D. Momberg, at $526,948 in 2010, and Judith Lisi, president and CEO of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, who collected $562,372 in 2010.
