TAMPA - Are you ever curious about the real lives of politicians, celebrities, local newsmakers and athletes?

We go beyond the questions that are news of the day. After all sometimes, we want know more about them. What's their favorite music? Biggest regret? And who do they look up to?

This week, a major announcement in the sports world-and with it a huge good-bye to someone whose been a part of Bay area history, Tampa Bay Lightning Captain Vinny Lecavalier.

The Tampa Bay Lightning exercised a compliance buy-out, allowed by the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Lightning will pay Lecavalier two-thirds of the value of his existing contract over twice the term of the deal.

He becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 5 and at that time will be eligible to sign with any team in the NHL, except Tampa Bay. And right now, it seems he'll have a job pretty quickly. Numerous teams are interested in him.

He was a first overall selection by The Lightning in the 1998 NHL Draft.

He's played 14 seasons in Tampa Bay, including as an alternate captain in 2004 when the Lightning won the franchise's first and only Stanley Cup.

He has also done a great deal for the community, establishing the Vinny Lecavalier Foundation in 2003.

Then in 2010, he opened the Vincent Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorder Center at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Lecavalier has received numerous awards for his sports accomplishments and his contributions t the community.

He said it will be difficult to leave the Bay area, a a place he's called home for more than a decided and half, but he vows to continue work with his charitable organizations.

I have met Lecavalier numerous times at various charity events. He truly is a class act.

He will be missed. He has done a great deal for the community-and by the answer to question 4, "What was your first job?" you can see by his answer, Vinny has a big heart.
