Getting to know new USF Men's Basketball Coach Orlando Antigua with "10 questions"

TAMPA, Fla - Are you ever curious about the real lives of politicians, celebrities, local newsmakers and athletes?

Each week, ABC Action News asks 10 questions of a Bay area leader, politician or even national celebrity.

We go beyond the questions that are news of the day. After all sometimes, we want know more about them. What's their favorite music? Greatest success? And who do they look up to?

This week, we are so excited that USF's new basketball coach, Orlando Antigua a.k.a. "Hurricane," is answering our 10 questions! If you don't know where "Hurricane" comes from, you'll know soon!

Born in Dominican Republic and then growing up in  Bronx, N.Y. Antigua replaced former coach Stan Heath this past March.

He moved to Tampa after serving as the Kentucky Wildcats assistant coach. He helped lead Kentucky to the National Championship game this past season where they lost to UCONN.

Antigua has a list of solid credentials behind him. Including coaching at his alma mater University of Pittsburgh as an assistant coach, as well as coaching job in Memphis. He is still the  current head coach of Dominican national team.

The coach is also an example of how anything is possible, if you stick to your convictions and follow your dreams.

Antigua moved to New York when he was a young child. The eldest of three brothers, Antigua  found himself helping his mother, a single mom, basically survive. The family faced homelessness and Antigua helped keep his family together.

And then, another tragedy, during his sophomore year. He was just a bystander on his Bronx street when a gunman in a drive by shooting shot him in the head near his left eye.  Doctors actually left the slug in. They told him it was too risky to remove.

Despite these challenges, he persevered, proving early on he was a leader.  The injury did not stop him from playing basketball weeks later. The  U.S. Basketball Writers Association even gave him its most courageous athlete honor.

He also served as student council president at his high school.

His basketball career was just beginning in high school. He also played in college at the University of Pittsburgh. Then the 6'7 sharpshooter also donned the uniform of  a Harlem Globetrotter!

The first ever Latin American player for the team he played for seven years. He then went on to play eight seasons in Puerto Rico Superior Basketball League. He was also on the Dominican Republic national team.

He is now the ninth head coach is USF's basketball team 40 year history.

Basketball season starts in November, Antigua is excited to get started and we are excited to get to know him.

I have not  had a chance to meet him yet, but am anxious too. I remember the press conference when he was introduced . Watching it, the coach appeared to be such a warm person. I am very excited for the Bay area and happy for the students.

Antigua is married and has two children, a little girl named Olivia and a little boy who shares his first name.
