TAMPA - Are you ever curious about the real lives of politicians, celebrities, local newsmakers and athletes? Who are their mentors and who would they really like to meet?

Each Tuesday, ABC Action News asks 10 questions of a Bay area leader or celebrity. They're fun questions that let you get to know the person.

This week, we are thrilled to hear from Florida's Insurance Commissioner. Kevin McCarty is answering our 10 questions!

McCarty has been the state's Florida commissioner since 2003. But he's been involved in public service since 1988. He worked with the Department of Labor and Employment Security and earned a reputation for being an expert in workers' compensation issues.

Three years later, the experience led him to the Florida Department of Insurance.  After working in the office for one year---the state was hit with Hurricane Andrew.

According to his biography on the state's website, McCarty became a point-man to improve private insurance.

Shortly after In January 2003, then Governor Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet made McCarty the first appointed insurance commissioner.

His office focuses on protecting the people of Florida. Responsibilities include regulation, compliance and enforcement of statutes related to insurance.

McCarty is also the President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. He also chairs a number of NAIC task forces

I have not had a chance to interview McCarty personally. But I have reached out to the office on numerous occasions. Especially, in the past several months surrounding the moves by the state's largest run insurer Citizens. McCarty's office is always prompt. His staff gets back to journalists and in my experience so far has been very helpful in navigating sometimes very complex issues.

McCarty attended the University of Florida where he graduated with a bachelor's degree and then went on for a Juris Doctorate from UF.
