Getting to know ABC ACTION NEWS journalist and new host of "The Now" Laura Harris with 10 questions

TAMPA, FLA - Are you ever curious about the real lives of politicians, celebrities, local newsmakers and athletes?

Each week, ABC Action News asks 10 questions of a Bay area leader, politician or even national celebrity.

We go beyond the questions that are news of the day. After all sometimes, we want know more about them. What's their favorite music? Greatest success? And who do they look up to?

This week we are thrilled to profile a familiar face here at ACTION NEWS as she takes on two new challenges!

Our very own Laura Harris is competing in this years Hands Across the Bay Dancing with the Stars!

It's just one of her big adventures. This month this ABC ACTION NEWS station debuts a new show at 4 PM called "The Now" and Laura is the proud host! Make sure to tune in, "The Now" starts on Monday the September 8th at 4 PM and promises to keep you in the know!

Laura joined the team two years ago coming to Tampa from Charleston, SC where she served as the station's morning anchor.

She is originally from Atlanta where her parents and her sister still live.

Laura stayed in the state to attend college at Georgia Southern University. She graduated Summa cum Laude and was a Division I soccer player for four years there!

Laura is always an inspiration to all of us in the newsroom, she is a strong advocate of exercise and taking care of yourself.

The motto she lives by is also inspiring. It is: "If you find something you like to do, you don't have to work a day in your life." I love it!

The bottom line being a journalist is not just a job to her it's her passion to bring viewers compelling stories.

It is interesting as you will read, journalism is not what Laura started out wanting to do, her life seemed to be focused on sports....but she's a true winner in my book on whatever she does!

To give you an example of what a kind person she is, I remember shortly after she first started, she asked about my daughter. Somehow we got on the topic that Samantha, who was four at the time, was getting ready for her first recital, but I couldn't go because it was on a Saturday and I couldn't get the day off. Without hesitation, Laura said "I will come in for you and no worries on trying to repay the favor." My heart just melted. What a great soul wouldn't you agree? I ended up having to work anyway, but that act of kindness stays with me and I will never forget her kindness.

Laura keeps herself busy, as mentioned she is very focused on a healthy workout regime. She said in her spare time she likes to golf, shop, (I commend her for admitting it and she does have a great sense of style!) She also likes go to the beach, but right now, this time of year it's all about football! She's tuned in watching her favorite college and pro teams.

If you want to find out which ones, ask her, she loves hearing from viewers you can e-mail her at Laura.Harris@wfts.com.

She is also an active member of her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,

She is committed to giving back to the community. She is a former board member of the Charleston YMCA, Meals on Wheels volunteer, as well as active in her church.

And remember this year she is also dancing for a cause! Taking part in Julie Weintraub's Annual Hands Across the Bay, Dancing with the Stars! ABC ACTION NEWS is a proud sponsor.

Votes are $10.00 but all the money goes to charity.

And now, here are Laura's answers, hope you enjoy!

Movie: Halloween series ; Song: Rascal Flatts "God Blessed The Broken Road"

2. Do you have a Smartphone? If so, what's your favorite app?

Yes; Nike Fuel Band APP and Pandora are tied.  I need my tunes when I work out ;)

3. Who do you count as your mentor(s)?

Robin Roberts, Anchor on Good Morning America
Sam Crenshaw, Sports Anchor, 11Alive NBC Atlanta

4. What was your very first job?

CNN Sports.  I was a logger and editor in the sports department.  Ask me anything about most sports (especially soccer, baseball, basketball and FOOTBALL) ... Im sure I know the answer!  I'm a huge sports fanatic.  I'm not really good with personal stats, but I know the rules and can play anything! (How well... that's another question.) LOL

5. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

My shopping addiction and my need for speed.  Retail therapy is very real and I exercise that right to often.  And let's just say I like fast cars... and going fast.  REALLY FAST!  Not a good thing on I-275  hahahahaha

6. What do you consider your greatest success?

It hasn't happened yet.  In life, I like to think success is relative.  It only last for a split second, like in sports.  I went to school to become

a sports agent.  My degree is in sports management and Business Administration.  Somehow along the way I ended up on TV and it has been an amazing ride the whole way.  Through it all... I've realized life is like sports.  You could win a big game today, but tomorrow lose horribly.  What's great about success is you can enjoy it, but see there is ALWAYS something better.  Something you can always strive for.  I have accomplished some pretty cool things thanks to God, but there is so much more to come from Laura Harris.  Only time will tell what the next MOMENT of success will be :)

7. Tell us something about you most people don't know?

I can play the violin and have been playing since  I was 13.  I also was a Division 1 soccer player.  I went to college on a soccer scholarship.  I was the goalkeeper.

8. If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be?

Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, Pope Francis

9. What is in your fridge right now?

Water, blueberries, strawberries, baked chicken, lots of sauces, a full produce drawer, too many limes (I love cutting them up and putting them in ice water), too many condiments and I think a random can of soda my Mom left when she was visiting months ago.

10. If you could have a different career, other then what you're doing now, what would it
be?

Its a tie (again)

A country music singer!!!!!!  Grand Ole Opry induction and all!  And the General Manager of an NFL team.
