TAMPA - Are you ever curious about the real lives of politicians, celebrities, local newsmakers and athletes? Who are their mentors and who would they really like to meet?
Each Tuesday, ABC Action News asks 10 questions of a Bay area leader or celebrity. They're fun questions that let you get to know the person.
This week, we hear from a familiar face here at ACTION NEWS, our Community affairs director Lissette Campos.
Lissette brings to this station such a plethora of experience and knowledge, it's such an honor to work with her. In addition, she is truly one of the kindest people I know-who always has a warm smile and words of comfort and support.
Lissette's career spans two decades. And right now, she said her position as the station's community affairs director is her "dream job."
She said how could focusing on people and organizations making a positive impact on our community not be a dream job?
Lissette launched "Positively Tampa Bay" in October 2008.
We hope you have a had a chance to watch her weekday segments. They are featured in the noon newscast on ABC ACTION NEWS.
Prior to her position, Lissette worked as an anchor and reporter in Tampa and Miami and has received numerous awards including four Emmy's.
Adding to her many accomplishments, Lissette earned the Hispanic Woman of the Year in Media award by the Tampa Hispanic Heritage Inc.
Lissette told us about her most memorable assignments. She's had quite a few to choose from! Including undercover reports from Russia in 1992 and Cuba in 1996.
She has also done many interesting interviews. Including with the Dali Lama; former presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush, Sr.; former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton; and Fidel Castro's daughter, Alina Fernandez Revuelta, upon her defection to the United States.
But, I have to say, my favorite story of hers is her own love story!
Lissette said she met her husband Angel on assignment when she was working in Miami. She said it was love at first sight and the two married five months later!
I have met Angel on numerous occasions and like his wife, he is a class act. Lissette and Angel seem to best friends as well.
1. What is your all-time favorite movie or song?
my all time favorite song? tough question because I love so many different genres of music. i don't really have a favorite song per say. Anything from Celia Cruz, Desi Arnaz, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Darius Rutger (Hootie), Tim McGraw. I love them all! If I could only pick one song - though - then it would have to be Amazing Grace.
2. Do you have a Smartphone? If so, what's your favorite app?
I finally got a smart phone a few months ago. I resisted getting one for YEARS! I was perfectly happy with my flip phone but my husband wore me down. My favorite app is the ABC Action News news app because I check the weather forecast often and always feel the need to "be in the know" of what's going on in the world.
3. Who do you count as your mentor(s)?
Who do you count as your mentors? I've been blessed to have had more than one mentor over the years... mentors are like bridges that help you get from one point in your life over to the next. I would have to say my very first mentor was my honors English teacher - Mrs. Carrillo - in middle school. She was the first person who ever told me I should pursue a career in writing... and really nurtured my love of story telling. Two other women began mentoring me when I was 20 years old and interning at my first tv station - 25 years later, we are still very close. Lourdes is a producer at ABC News in New York City and Mercy hosts NotiMujer on CNN en Espanol. Their mentoring helped shaped me as a journalist, but most importantly as a human being. News business can be very cut-throat and Lourdes & Mercy always believed in me...and in the process taught me to "believe in me" too.
4. What was your very first job?
My first job? I was 16 and a file clerk at the business office of hospital in Miami. First job in TV? Video tape librarian at the Univision station in Miami, FL where I overstayed my internship.
5. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I wouldn't change anything that's happened in my life - good or bad - because it's helped shape the person I am today. I'm far from perfect - still a work in progress - but thankful for the many blessings and lessons learned so far. There is ONE thing on my body if could change, it would be my hair. I have too much of it! The girls in middle school would call me tarantula legs! Ugh! Not nice! My mom was super strict and didn't want me shaving my legs before my 15th birthday.
6. What do you consider your greatest success?
My family. My husband Angel, daughters Sophie and Audrey
7. Tell us something about you most people don't know?
I don't think most people know I LOVE country music - fell in love with it when we moved to Tampa and I started listening to WQYK. Or that my make up case at home is actually a tackle
box! My husband picked it out for me. I love it.
8. If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be?
Christ, George Washington & Amelia Earhardt... so many questions to ask!
9. What is on the outside your fridge right now?
My fridge? oh my, it's an eclectic collection of pictures of my girls, school drawings, old report cards....
10. If you could have a different career, other then what you're doing now, what would it be?
Another career outside of journalism? I would love to be a full time writer/author. My first attempt would be to write about my mom & dad and what life was like for them when they arrived in the U.S. from Cuba. their stories keep us on the edge of our seats...every time they tell them.... never get tired of hearing about those first few years...as the saying goes "it was the best of times. it was the worst of times."
Lissette has a facebook fan page and we hope you "like" it to follow her many stories of people making a difference in this community.
