Getting to know ABC Action News anchor Brendan McLaughlin with 10 questions

TAMPA - Our person of the week is one of my mentors and a familiar face to many Tampa Bay area residents: ABC ACTION NEWS Anchor Brendan McLaughlin.

1.) What is your all time favorite movie or song?

The Godfather (part 1) is my favorite dramatic film and the musical score is terrific. I also never get tired of The Princess Bride - a sweet, funny movie.

2.) . Do you have a Smartphone? If so, what's your favorite app?
I use my iPhone so much, there's an imprint of an apple on my left hand. I'm mildly addicted to the scrabble game, " Words with Friends" and look forward to the daily news quiz on " Qrank" every day.  Of the apps that aren't complete time wasters, I love " Dragon Search." It's like magic.

3. Who do you count as your mentor(s)?
During my TV news internship, I was very lucky to work with some of the best reporters in the business. Reporters including Wendy Tokuda, Hank Plante, Mike Hegedus and Kate Kelly got me excited about television news and taught me storytelling techniques I still use today.   I also have three older brothers, Bill, Michael and Sean who are my best friends and are always there for me with advice and support.

4. What was your very first job?
Sweeping the floor of Northgate Drug store. The owner pulled me aside one time and said "You know, Brendan. You can tell a lot about a man by the way he sweeps a floor."  I still haven't figured out if that was wisdom or complete hooey.

5. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I'd be able to sing like Tom Jones.

6. What do you consider your greatest success?
Choosing a wonderful life partner. I had the good luck to meet Sandy on that fateful day in San Francisco in 1983 and the good sense to take care of that relationship ever since

7. Tell us something about you most people don't know?
I have dual U.S./Irish citizenship.

8. If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be?
It would be a "Thomas" themed dinner with Chef Thomas Keller doing the cooking, Thomas Jefferson for the conversation and singer-songwriter, Tom Waits for the entertainment.

9. What is in your fridge right now?
The usual, plus enough jars of jams, chutneys, spreads and condiments to stock a store. I can't resist weird concoctions like "poblano fig compote" or "anchovy walnut dipping sauce".

10. If you could have a different career, other than what you're doing now, what would it be?
I get really excited about traveling, so being a travel writer for the New York Times would be a dream job.
