Deputies are searching for a man, who they said shot at a home, while a mother and her 5-year-old son were inside.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. on Thursday in Beverly Hills. People, who live in the neighborhood, confused gunfire for fireworks.

"This neighborhood is a quiet neighborhood .We just never expect anything like that to happen here," Betty Brown said.

According to deputies, the family has lived in the neighborhood less than a year, which is part of the reason why they believe the shooter was looking for a different house. Deputies said the mother and son hid toward the back of the home.

"This is unusual because...in the fact that there is no affiliation between the shooter and the people who live inside the home," Citrus County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Lindsay Blair said.

Deputies are searching for a dark 4-door sedan.

"You see things on the news you think oh wow that's horrible, but my family is safe -until it happens to you," Andrea Ballard said.

Ballard moved into the neighborhood 8 years ago and now she is worried about her family's safety.

"I'm nervous that it could happen again. If it continues to happen, than I really don't want to have to but I might have to move because, you know, I have two kids," Ballard said.

If anyone has any information about this case, they need to call the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.
