TAMPA - Here are five things you need to know happening in Florida on Thursday, September 12.
(1) St. Petersburg budget hearing
The St. Petersburg City Council will hold the first of two Fiscal Year 2014 city budget hearings on Thursday.
The proposed $211 million budget Mayor Bill Foster submitted in July includes a lower millage rate, general wage increases for some city employees and funding for five new police officer positions.
The recommended budget is helped by increasing property values that would generate $3.1 million in additional revenue for the city.
Tonight's budget hearing begins at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Petersburg City Hall. Public comments regarding the budget are welcome.
The final hearing where the 2014 budget is scheduled to be approved will occur on September 26. To learn more about the budget, visit www.stpete.org/budget.
A number of people who are upset about increase spending in the city are planning on holding a protest outside City Hall starting at 6:00 p.m.
(2) UT new residence hall grand opening
The University of Tampa is hold a grand opening celebration for its newest residence hall on Thursday.
West Kennedy Hall officially opened for over 500 students in August. The 11-story building features two large community multipurpose rooms, a rooftop solar array to heat water and an international art exhibit in the lobby.
Following grand opening ceremonies at 11:00 a.m.. the public will be allowed to take public tours of the residence hall from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It is located on Kennedy Boulevard near North Boulevard.
(3) Dunedin Restaurant Week
The 1st annual Dunedin Restaurant Week kicks off in Dunedin on Thursday.
Participating restaurants will be offering food and drink specials today through September 22. Diners who order a specially-discounted Stella Artois (bottle or draft) will get to keep the glass it comes in as part of a promotion sponsored by Great Bay Distributors.
People who submit a Best Dining Contest Entry Form during Restaurant Week will be entered in a drawing for a number of prizes including a weekend getaway for two at Beso Del Sol waterfront resort, restaurant certificates, and gift certificates from Dunedin stores.
Treasure Island Mayor Bob Minning will proclaim his city is changing its name to Revis Island for one day on Thursday.
The proclamation is being made to honor newly-acquired Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Derrelle Revis.
The ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. at The Club at Treasure Island. Buccaneers players, cheerleaders, Bucs mascot Captain Fear and front office representatives are expected to attendance the event.
The Buccaneers host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September 15 at 4:05 p.m. in the team's 2013 regular season home opener
(5) Tampa Bay Lightning training camp practices begin
The Tampa Bay Lighting hold their first 2013 training camp practice on Thursday.
Thirty-eighty players are scheduled to participate in the camp. Besides stars Martin St. Louis, Ryan Malone and Steven Stamkos, the camp will include new Bolts forward Valtteri Filppula and a number of recent draft picks.
Practice begins at 9:00 a.m. today at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. It is open to the public and free to attend.
Today's training camp session is broken into three sessions with the final one concluding at 3:30 p.m.
Saturday the Lightning will hold the popular Fan Fest at the Forum beginning at 8:00 a.m.
