5 things you need to know happening in Florida on Monday, March 24, 2014

TAMPA - Here are five things you need to know happening in Florida on Monday, March 24, 2014.

(1) Free STD testing on World TB Day

The Florida Department of Health (FDOH) in Hillsborough County is offering free HIV, STD and TB testing for World TB Day on Monday.

The free tests will be given out from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the FDOH location at 1105 East Kennedy Boulevard in downtown Tampa.

World TB Day is celebrated on March 24 of each year. It commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB.

Events are held on World TB Day to promote TB awareness, education, testing, and prevention in order to reduce the TB mortality rate across the world.

(2) Hillsborough County home to be demolished

Demolition crews are set to tear down an abandoned 8,700-square-foot house in Lutz on Monday.

A contractor hired by the county will demolish the house which has been condemned for dangerous and deteriorating conditions. Construction on the house, located at 3319 Crenshaw Lake Road, stopped over five years ago.

The county began fining the property for code violations on July 31, 2010. The total fines now top $254,000.

The demolition is scheduled to begin at approximately 8:00 p.m.

(3) Ellenton skaters at World Championships

A United States figure skating pair that trains in Ellenton will be in Japan on Monday for the start of the 2014 ISU World Championships.

Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay accepted an invite to skate after Caydee Denney suffered an injury to her right ankle. Caydee Denney and John Coughlin are the reigning U.S. pairs bronze medalists.

Zhang and Bartholomay won the silver medal at the United States Championships in January and placed 12th at the 2014 Winter Olympics last month in Sochi, Russia.

The pair has trained at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex for the past two years.

(4) Ottawa Senators vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night will attempt to extend their best streak since winning the Stanley Cup in 2004.

The Lightning are 5-0-3 in their last eight games, its best streak without a regulation loss since March 2004.

Tampa Bay's last loss came in its first game without former captain Martin St. Louis on March 6.

Saturday night the Bolts lost 4-3 in overtime to the Pittsburgh Penguins on the road. Steven Stamkos scored in the game.

Since going pointless in his first three games back from his broken foot, Stamkos has exploded, scoring six goals and three assists in the past six games.

The Senators have struggled of late. Ottawa is mired in a six-game winless stretch that has seen the team get only two points.

It may not be any easier for the Senators tonight. The Lightning have won four straight games against Ottawa at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, including both games this season.

Tonight's game begins at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit lightning.nhl.com .
