5 things you need to know happening in Florida on Monday, August 19

TAMPA - Here are five things you need to know happening in Florida on Monday, August 19, 2013.

(1) Back to School
 
Students in Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Manatee, Sarasota, and Hernando head out for the first day of the 2013-2014 school year. 
 
Hillsborough County buses are going through a practice run today, and school there starts Tuesday.
 
(2) Traffic safety reminders
 
You may see a lot of firefighters on the road in Lakeland and Bradenton today.  They will be out reminding drivers to slow down, buckle up, and pay attention to pedestrians.
 
(3) Last day to register to vote
 
Today is the last day in Pasco County to register to vote before the September 17 special primary election.
 
(4) America's newest citizens
 
There is a special honor for 75 people in the Tampa Bay area today.  Those 75, from 35 different countries, will take the oath of allegiance to be America's newest citizens Monday afternoon.
 
The ceremony begins at 1:00 at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.
 
(5) Choosing a name for baby elephant
 
With the help of her newborn, elephant Matjeka will choose her calf's name today at Lowry Park Zoo.  
 
The baby elephant was born July 29.
