Semi fire shuts down eastbound I-4

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - A semi fire Friday morning shut down eastbound I-4 east of Mango Road.

The engine compartment of the 2006 Freightliner operated by Agmark Transportation out of Nashville caught fire shortly before 10:30 a.m., according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

The driver, Clay Rollins, 40, of Winter Haven, was able to steer the truck to the shoulder and escaped without injury.

The tractor trailer's cargo, a citrus extract known as Orange Essence, did not catch fire.

Brandon Alternative School and Burnett Middle School students students were told to shelter in place as a precaution.

I-4 was shut down in both directions for a time while crews extinguished the blaze.

Westbound I-4 reopened around 11 a.m. Authorities began reopening the eastbound lanes around 11:40 a.m.
