A 21-year-old murder suspect was arrested Wednesday after crashing a stolen pick-up truck and running from deputies, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert Alton Henderson of Plant City was arrested in a pond east of Thonotosassa where he tried to escape deputies.
Henderson is accused of fatally shooting Shelby Jones, 52, on Aug. 8 in Seffner.
Deputies said Henderson entered a shed that belonged to Jones’ brother wearing a bandana over his face and told the men to “Give it up.” He struck Jones’ brother with a gun, deputies said, and then shot Jones in the chest.
Witnesses told deputies that he’d confessed to the shooting, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
About 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, Henderson was seen driving a stolen truck near Knights Griffin Road and Cooper Road near Thonotosassa. Deputies said he crashed the truck into a tree after noticing he was being followed, ran into woods and then into the pond.
Henderson is charged with felony murder, attempted robbery with a firearm, grand theft auto and criminal mischief.
