Propane gas tank explosion injures two in Hillsborough County

HILLSBOROUGH CO., Fla. - A mother and daughter have been taken to the hospital following a gas leak and propane tank explosion in Hillsborough County.

According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the blast happened just before 10:00 a.m. at The Oaks at Woodland Apartments, 4747 W. Waters Ave.

"It happened so fast," said Alaezea Longmire"I couldn't think straight. I was shaking." 
 
On Monday morning, Longmire was spending time at the pool with family and friends to celebrate her 17th birthday.
 
Her mother, Dana Brezina, put food on the grill.
 
"She went to put the meat and stuff on it and it exploded in her face and they flew back" 
 
Brezina and her 13-year-old daughter, Jada, were both thrown back a few feet.
 
Clay Nycz, an Army Vet who served in Afghanistan, quickly jumped a fence to help.
 
"As soon as I walked in I heard a blast just like I did overseas, straight like an IED," Nycz said.
 
He helped pull the mother and daughter away from the rubble.
 
"It was wafting, wafting with petroleum," he recalled.
 
Nycz said both of them were in shock and tried to reassure them that they were going to be ok.
 
Brezina suffered a broken wrist and has burns on her thigh.  Jada was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
 
Fire investigators believe the explosion was caused by a small leak or human error, but they are still investigating.
 
Longmire told Action News, her birthday present is known her mom and sister are ok.
 
"My mom said to make sure I have the best birthday today," Longmire said.
