Hillsborough schools transportation chief John Franklin resigns

TAMPA - John Franklin, the General Manager of Transportation for Hillsborough County Schools has resigned, the district announced Wednesday.

According to a release, " Franklin steered the Transportation Department through a very eventful time of change and challenges."

Franklin served as transportation chief for seven years.

"We thank John Franklin for his tireless service, and wish him well in his new endeavors,'' said Hillsborough School Superintendent MaryEllen Elia. "I have reiterated to our Transportation team that our goal remains unchanged - we work together to safely transport children every day."

No reason was given for his resignation.

The district has been under scrutiny in the wake of numerous complaints.

In February, school bus drivers lined up at a school board meeting to vent their frustration over low pay, old buses, student safety and a new for new leadership.

"This is the eighth largest district in this country and we look like fools," Sheila Mingo said.
"There definitely has to be some changes here folks. We're losing drivers," Kelmie Bigelow said.
"We have got the dirtiest, filthiest buses out there. They're horrendous," said Susan Valdes, school board vice chairwoman.
The school district will immediately conduct a nationwide search for Franklin's replacement, according to Wednesday's statement.
