Hillsborough County grandfather on a late night walk saves his family from an overnight house fire

Family's two dogs perished in fire

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - A grandfather on a late night walk saw his family's house on fire and helped save them.

The man noticed the roof of his neighbor's house on East 25th Street was on fire. The home, it turns out, is the one his family, including his grandchildren, live in.

The grandfather alerted his wife, and both of them ran to the burning home and knocked on the home's doors and windows, waking the family inside.

All six family members, including four children between the ages of seven and twelve, were able to get out of the home.

The adult man living in the burning home was transported to a hospital for treatment of minor cuts and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters arrived on scene and extinguished the flames within thirty minutes. The family’s rabbit survived the fire, unfortunately, the family's two dogs perished.

Officials say the house is a total loss. The second floor collapsed after the family had exited. The American Red Cross is assisting the family with food, clothing and shelter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
