Fire inside JCPenny store at Westfield Brandon Mall, damage estimated to be over $1 million
BRANDON, Fla. - The JC Penney at Westfield Brandon mall will be shutdown Sunday due to a two-alarm fire.
Hillsborough Fire and Rescue responded to the JC Penney around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Responders arrived and saw heavy smoke coming from the store.
All personnel inside the store at the time were evacuated.
Fire crews were able to enter the 148,000 square feet building to put out the fire. The store suffered heavy smoke, water and fire damage.
It took firefighters three and a half hours to remove all the smoke from the store.
Crews were able keep the smoke from going to the rest of the mall. No stores outside of JC Penney suffered any damage.
Investigators later determined the fire was electrical and accidental.
JC Penney will be closed Sunday, but the rest of Westfield mall will be open for regular business hours.
No store employees, or fire personnel were injured during the fire.
