Elephant picks baby's the name by eating first from one of two piles of food

TAMPA - A new baby elephant among the east African herd at Lowry Park Zoo has been named Mavi.  It's from the Swahili language and translates to "voices."

Zoo workers came up with five possible names for the baby elephant.  All five names started with the letter 'M,' in honor of the mother elephant 'Matjeka.'

Thanks to online voting, the choice of five names was reduced down to two.

The newborn elephant Mavi has a sister.

The Lowry Park Zoo manages African elephants and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
