PLANT CITY, Fla - A convicted child molester was arrested outside of a Plant City middle school Thursday. Deputies say he was carrying a loaded gun.
Bruce Hicks, 46, was arrested at Turkey Creek Middle School in Plant City.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Hicks was spotted by a deputy on school property. Hicks was apparently carrying a loaded .32 caliber handgun.
According to Larry McKinnon with HCSO, Hicks was found pulling a dolly and had a toy car with him.
Hicks, who has prior convictions for lewd and lascivious behavior on children, was arrested and is now facing multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon, open carrying of a weapon and possession of a firearm on school property.
McKinnon said Hicks identifies himself as a sovereign citizen.
"The suspect started making odd comments that he is a sovereign citizen," explained Cristal Bermudez-Nunez, a public information officer with HCSO. "That he doesn't have to abide by the law. The deputy clearly asked him, 'Do you have a firearm?' and he says, 'Yes, I do, but i don't have to abide by Hillsborough County law.'"
Parents picking up their children Friday afternoon told ABC Action News they did not know about the arrest.
They were also upset that the district did not notify them of the arrest nor did they lockdown any of the schools as a safety precaution.
"Its' not good," said Larry Cumbie, a concerned parent who also attended the middle school decades ago. "Didn't think something would happen that like here in a small town. It is not good."
