TAMPA BAY, Fla. - Travelers heading to Cuba will soon be able to fly out of Tampa International Airport.
After 50 years, the Cuban government is permitting flights between Cuba and Tampa that could start as soon as September 10.
"This is a monumental day. It took many people and many years working together to secure Tampa International Airport as the new gateway airport to Cuba," Joe Lopano, CEO, Tampa International Airport.
"Accessing this vital international destination will benefit all of Tampa Bay with its economic impact and it is great news for our Cuban-American community," Lopano continued.
Until now, travelers headed to Cuba had to fly out of Miami.

The Tampa Bay Area has the second largest Cuban-American population, after Miami.
