Bus ridership up nearly 20 percent amid rising gas pump prices

TAMPA - New numbers show many people in the Bay Area are looking for alternative ways to get around as gas prices continue to rise. For some, that means turning to the bus.

HART bus ridership increased by 19 percent last month, compared to the same month last year. Ridership was 1,138,046 in February 2011 and 958,515 in February 2010.

HART also credits more late-night service and improved frequency of buses for drawing in more riders.

"During the past few years, HART has implemented improvements to its service to provide a better product to customers," said David Armijo, CEO of HART.
