HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - A moped with 3 people on it was struck by a car near Dale Mabry and Busch Blvd. late Sunday night. One of the passengers, rolled into the center land where she was struck and killed by another car.
Florida Highway Patrol said the moped, which had 3 people on it, was struck from behind by a car. All three were thrown from the moped onto the road.
Sgt. Steve Gaskins said one of the passengers, an unidentified woman, rolled into the center lane where she was struck and killed by another car.
The driver, Cameron Maddox, 19 and Michael Garcia, 16, were rushed to the hospital. Garcia later passed away. Maddox is listed in serious condition.
The driver of the car that struck the moped left the scene, but was later tracked down. It belongs to Amanda Diaz. So far, no charges have been filed.
Sgt. Gaskins told us that could take months. "Before we make any charges, prematurely, we want to have all the information," Gaskins explained. "All the facts put in one piece."
FHP said one fact is having three people on a moped is never a good idea.
"You don't want to have more people on the vehicle than the vehicle is designed to transport," Sgt. Gaskins pointed out. "You add extra weight to the vehicle and people can't be restrained."
A knock on the door of 23-year-old Amanda Diaz went unanswered.
A floor mat outside her apartment, "live, love, laugh".
It is something no one is doing on this day.
