Physical inactivity is as dangerous as smoking and obesity, according to a CNN report.
New research found that sedentary lifestyles are causing one in 10 deaths worldwide.
A series of five studies released by the British Medical Journal, The Lancet, considers the issue pandemic.
The studies were specifically scheduled to be released just a few days before the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Each study focuses on specific issues related to inactivity or global health, and Harvard researchers found that inactivity was the cause of 5.3 million deaths in 2008.
It increased deaths from coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancers, one study found.
But if inactivity rates went down by 10 to 20 percent, it could save half a million to 1.3 million lives annually.
