SEFFNER, Fla. - A Florida Highway Patrol trooper, his passenger, and another driver were hospitalized Wednesday night after a crash on I-4 when the trooper attempted to cross the highway with emergency lights on.
The trooper, 46-year-old Anthony Horne, had been investigating a crash on westbound I-4 near mile marker 12 in Seffner around 10:00 p.m., according to FHP. Horne tried to cross the westbound lanes to help one of the motorists return to her vehicle.
The patrol car crossed into the path of a box truck where the two collided, sending the cruiser into the unoccupied vehicle from the initial crash. The box truck also spun around and hit another vehicle traveling along westbound I-4.
Horne was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and the passenger in the cruiser along with the driver of the box truck were taken to Brandon Regional Hospital. Investigators say their injuries were minor.
Westbound lanes of I-4 were closed for a time. The crash remains under investigation.
