TAMPA, Fla. - Former boxing world champion Antonio Tarver was arrested last week on a warrant out of Las Vegas, Nevada, accused of felony theft and skipping out on a $200,000 marker at a casino more than two years ago.
He was pulled over by the Florida Highway Patrol and spent four days in jail. In an exclusive interview with ABC Action News, Tarver said it was a dark time in his life and he had a hunch it would catch up with him eventually.
"I could have wrote the check," he said, "but not knowing where I was going to eat in the next 6 months or a year, and still 2 1/2 years later I'm still trying to rebuild my career and life."
Tarver said that with help from his manager, he has since repaid the debt.
He hopes his daughter, who's in 7th grade, will forgive him and that he can clear his name in the Tampa Bay area. "I want to make Tampa proud one more time," said Tarver. "When it's all said and done, I just want to be remembered as a winner and somebody that no matter how hard life knocked them down, they were always able to get back up."
