ABC Action News is proud to announce this year’s finalists for the Taking Action Against Domestic Violence Officer of the Year Award.
Congratulations to Corporal Manuel Lowe of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Detective Greg Givens of the University of South Florida Police Department and Detective Robert McLellan of the Plant City Police Department.
All three officers went above and beyond the call of duty in pursuit of cases involving domestic violence.
Corporal Lowe will be honored as the 2014 winner for his work on a 2013 case involving John Weldon.
The 29-year-old was convicted of murder charges after tricking his girlfriend into taking an abortion pill under the guise that it was an antibiotic.
His then girlfriend, Remee Jo Lee, was 6 weeks pregnant.
Wheldon was convicted of falsifying a prescription from his father’s OB/GYN medical practice in order to obtain the drug.
Corporal Lowe’s efforts in the investigation took him to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigations Crime Lab which ultimately helped obtain the blood tests and scientific evidence that lead to federal charges, and eventually the conviction for Wheldon. He is serving time in prison.
This year’s other finalists are detectives Givens and McLellan.
Givens’ work on a stalking case may have saved the life of a USF student & faculty member.
After weeks of investigating, Givens located the victim’s stalker hiding in a building across from where she worked.
In the parking lot, detectives found a large knife and rope in the suspect's car.
In Plant City, Detective McLellan’s empathetic approach helped a wife violently attacked in the presence of her two small children.
