Construction continues at I-275 and Dale Mabry Highway

Cars detoured during weekend days

TAMPA - Work crews at the I-275 overpass construction site at Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa said they had laid the final beam on the supports ahead of schedule, meaning a planned closure of the roadway was avoided Sunday night.

Construction at the on ramp to southbound I-275 from Dale Mabry remained closed all weekend, as crews continued shifting the ramp in between the current I-275 and the new overpass.

That meant drivers had to find other ways onto the interstate using detours.  The process has been frustrating for some drivers.

"It's horrendous.  The traffic is totally horrible right now," said Reegan Jones of Tampa.

"For me to take a 15 minute drive it's running almost an hour right now.  It's definitely not good," Jones said.

Rafael Quirico has been trying to get home to see his one month old in the traffic, and the detours have added to his travel time from work.

"An extra ten minutes, so from there you're looking at about 55 minutes," Quirico said.

Here are the construction areas and the proposed detours as listed on the Florida Department of Transportation website:
