TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Akeem Spence is facing drug charges after being stopped by a state trooper in Alabama just across the Florida border.
Spence, 22, was stopped in Flomaton, Ala. for speeding in excess of 100 mph.
According to reports, a search of his car turned up marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and released on $3,000 bond.
Bucs Coach Lovie Smith released a statement Wednesday afternoon:
"We have been informed of the situation involving Akeem Spence and are working with local authorities to get additional information. We will wait to get all the facts, but the initial reports are concerning and disappointing. I have spoken with Akeem and expressed my dissatisfaction with his involvement in this situation. As a member of the Buccaneers, he will be held to the high standards we have set for all members of this organization."
A court date was set for March 3.
