TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor will stay on for one more year following her retirement in May.
Mayor Bob Buckhorn made the announcement during his State of the City address Tuesday morning.
Under normal circumstances, Castor would be required to retire because she belongs to the city's Deferred Retirement Option Program, also known as DROP.
Buckhorn cited a major reduction in crime beginning with former chief Stephen Hogue. Castor took over from him in 2009.
The mayor gave his third State of the City Address before a packed house inside the Armature Works Building in historic Tampa Heights
