CLEARWATER, FL -- A 15-month old infant died Thursday night after apparently choking on sunflower seeds, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Detectives say Stephan Talley, 1, was visiting his father's home at 15641 Morgan Street when the incident happened at around 11:30 pm. The dad, 20-year-old Michael Hamilton, told detectives his son was with a two other children, ages 3 and 6, in one of the family's bedrooms, while he was with other adults in the home.
Hamilton said he had been constantly checking on the children, according to the Sheriff's Office.
At one point one of the older kids told Hamilton that Talley had something in his mouth. Hamilton rushed to his son and found him unresponsive, detectives said.
It appears that he had put a handful of sunflower seeds into his mouth and started to choke, witnesses said.
Hamilton and another family member performed CPR and were able to resuscitate him, and paramedics continued to remove seeds from his mouth. However as the boy was being taken to All-Children's Hospital, Talley's condition worsened and he was rerouted to Largo Medical Center.
He died there at 12:04 am Friday morning.
The death appears to be an accident and no charges have been filed.
