Nearly everyone has been touched by cancer. In fact, more than 1.6 million people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year. Founded in 2005, Breakaway from Cancer is a collaboration between Amgen and four nonprofit organizations. Its aim is to raise awareness of important resources available to people affected by cancer -- from prevention to survivorship. Anyone confronted with a cancer diagnosis knows that one person alone cannot fight cancer – you need a strong support team.
This morning award winning journalist and cancer survivor Joan Lunden joins us to share the importance of early detection and empower people to get screened. Through her advocacy she inspired others to protect their own health. She is also joined by Kim Thiboldeaux, CEO of Cancer Support Community, one of the four non-profits that is part of Breakaway from Cancer. Both discuss why it is so crucial to have a strong support system in place.
