Aging veterans may qualify for additional benefits to pay for their care

Added benefits for veterans

Ivo Kisic with Hillsborough County's Division of Veterans Affairs spends much of his work day educating aging veterans and their families about Aid and Attendance pension benefits.

The veteran has to be older than 65 and have served in a wartime period. This benefit pays as much as $1,785 per month to offset the costs of a caregiver or an assisted living facility. It's a benefit Kisic says many are not aware of.

County veterans affairs offices as well as groups like the VFW and American Legion all offer free assistance for veterans and their families seeking service related benefits from compensation to health care.

John McQueen with Anderson McQueen Funeral Home encourages veterans and their families to leave no benefit behind when it comes to end-of-life planning.

You are entitled to be buried in a national cemetery, which can save veterans $10,000 to $14,000. For those who don't want to be laid to rest in a national cemetery, veterans' families may qualify for a burial allowance.
